Old Demons

“We got Nari’s message,” John said.

“And I was already here,” Rogue_1.5 added.

“And I was here to make sure this one didn’t get caught stealing too much stuff,” Buzz replied.

Buzz shoved the rogue who jangled with precious coins.

“Tell them what you saw,” Buzz said.

“Well I was exploring the palace…” the rogue started.

“Stealing,” Wolf interrupted.

“PROCURING items useful for future endeavors,” Rogue_1.5 countered.

“The karma system doesn’t do technicalities,” Gligly21 said.

“You have a karma system?” Illume asked.

“Part of a new patch through home hard drives,” Mia said.

“Which you don’t have,” Rogue_1.5 muttered.

Wolf elbowed the thief, who muttered a halfhearted apology.

“Still haven’t gotten to what you saw,” Buzz interrupted.

“Yeah, right, sorry,” Rogue_1.5 said. “Anyway, I was sharpening my stabacus…”

“Stabacus?” Nari asked.

She, Ingrid, and Khal entered the room, led by Ben and Emily.

“Yes, my stabacus; it’s a revolutionary weapon that will forever change the tide of warfare,” Rogue_1.5 said, mildly flustered.

“No, it’s not,” Buzz countered.

“I’m sorry, I’m afraid we’re not going to be able to continue until we at least see this stabacus,” Shinima added as she slid in from the doorway.

With a sigh, Buzz placed his hand on his face. The rogue reached into his satchel and pulled out a sheathed gladius.

“That doesn’t look so special,” Shinima said.

“But wait!” the rogue said.

Illume leaned forward, his eyes narrowed on the blade. What kind of weapon could revolutionize warfare against the Vasinar? He bit his lower lip in anticipation as his heart raced with excitement.

The rogue slowly drew his weapon. The grind of blade on sheath dramatically filled the air. The Plane Walker found himself holding his breath in excitement. As the beta tester fully unsheathed the sword, a wave of disappointment washed over the Raakmos. The weapon held two thin gaps just off center with small rods housing little beads that slid the eighth of an inch of movement they were allowed.

“Is that it?” Illume asked.

“What do you mean ‘is that it’?” Rogue_1.5 asked. “This is the most beautiful weapon in existence.”

“Does it at least have magic?” Nari asked.

“Better,” the rogue said. “It allows me to keep track of how many enemies I’ve killed.”

“Which is immediately erased the second you swing the thing!” Buzz blurted. “Now will you please put the abacus away and finish the story!”

“It’s a stabacus,” Rogue_1.5 said with a snooty resolve before sheathing the weapon. “Anyway, I was sharpening this and I smelled something horrible. It almost made me throw up, but I did get really lightheaded, so I went to a window to get some fresh air, and I mean the air out there is choice.”

“How were you able to smell anything?” John asked.

“Oh, I have a full sensory hookup to my system,” the thief replied. “Anyway, I hear this woman whispering. I thought it was sweet nothings for a second, so I thought to myself, self, let’s see how realistic this game gets. And I followed the voice, but man, did the smell get worse and worse!”

Rogue_1.5’s ramblings pushed Illume to the edge. He clenched his jaw as he fought the sensation of ants under his skin.
